You will either love this game or you will hate it. The game begins very slow and only those who are willing to put up with the first few hours of fetch quests will really be exposed to this amazing game. The graphics are bad but the soundtrack is epic. The story is very engaging and there is four different endings to see. The combat can be repetitive though with swinging your sword and spamming your magic spells. This game is truly a sleeper hit and I cannot recommend this game enough.
Nier gets off to a good pace but is unfortunately slowed down by repetitive enemies and boring side quests. The combat is decent, simple, with some pretty magic effects and fun boss fights. The voice work is good and the story is fairly engaging at times. The upgrade system is somewhat interesting, imprinting words on your spells and weapons to create useful combo effects. NIER is simple but engaging, definitely worth a rental.
It's a game that you either get or you don't. I'm sure 95% of you won't get past the kinda boring first few hours and it's fine, but those who do will get to play one of the most original RPG I've played in years. The soundtrack is incredible, the story is completely awesome, and the way they're dealing with multiple playthroughs as never been done before and is quite simply one of the best gaming experience I've had in 2010. Beat it 4 times in a single rental and still bought it.
