I bought this game the day it came out, and haven't been able to put it down since! It's so big and epic, I love it. The main story is interesting, and it has many sidequests that will keep you busy for hours. The combat system can take a bit of getting used to though, it's not as polished as Gears of War. Generally I'm not playing this for the combat, though, I'm playing it for the epic story and character development. Be prepared for a lot of talking though: don't expect to just run and gun
First of all, BUY THIS GAME! Second of all, BUY THIS GAME! And lastly, be prepared to lose your girlfriend/boyfriend because you will not be able to put the controller down. Wow is this game awesome, a great RPG, with a twist of real time combat. I love the fact that its not the same game when you play it through a second, third or fourth time. A lot of decisions you make affect you in different ways in the game. It's like taking Fable to a whole new level, and a whole new galaxy.
Mass Effect is my choice for GOTY for 2007. It doesn't get much better then this for bang for your buck value for just one game. Graphics are top notch minus a few draw time issues that in no way take away from the fun game experience. The story, characters and their voice actors, the action and the multiple routes that you can take on each playthrough are the best features and exactly what an RPG game is all about! Please let the trilogy rumors be true...waiting anxiously for ME2!!
While the honeymoon is over at this point, I can still say it is an excellent game. Graphics are good, and the music fits the atmosphere completely. The biggest problem is that Mass Effect portrays a universe that is essentially dead. The random planets you visit will be almost completely devoid of pretty much everything. I really wanted to go and explore on my own at first but there was nothing to see. Worth a rent, or buying if you gnab a deal.
Mass Effect defintely is a must rent and buy game for any RPG or Sci-fi nut (like me). The best aspects are a compelling story, excellent graphics (although textures do pop in and out), huge universe to explore, good length (about 30 to 40 hours), so many possible interactions (make replay high), mix of combat with exploration and different / interesting races to communicate (and there all very different with deep history). On the whole this is an excellent technical and designed game.
Great story, and a perfect length. On the easiest difficulty setting, it's a breeze, and on the hardest, it's a epic battle. Perfect balance between TPS elements and RPG elements.

Mass Effect is a fantastic story driven RPG that isn't without its flaws. Many of the side quests are very repetitive, and there are some definite usability issues with the interface, but the game rises above these as a fantastic narrative. Decisions you make will actually change the outcome of the game, and interacting with other characters turns into the best part of the experience. Be prepared for multiple playthroughs to get the full effect though.
Epic in scope, Mass Effect is another Bioware classic. As always, the story and dialog is superb, and the immersion level is very high. While the combat isn't the best, everything else is spectacular. Mass Effect is proof that games have matured as a medium and can be as memorable, if not more so, than the best books and films.
So I made the mistake of renting the first one sfter playing the second lol. If you play the second one first, I will warn you the first will seem very crappy. The graphics are choppy and not amazing, but there not horrible. The entire game play is choppy compared to the second one so I was not impressed. If you don't want to be disappointed, play this game before the second.
This game is excellent. I'm very into RPGs/Story driven games, and this is the first immersive FPS I've played with solid storyline elements. This game seemed to be the perfect length, although I just did the core storyline and no side missions. At times, the sheer ammount of dialogue/conversations can be overwhelming and I just wanted to get on with them. Either way, excellent game and i'd recommend a rental for sure. (I'd rate it 4/5)
Mass Effect is a wonderfull, cinimatic, & emence Action/Shooter/RPG. this game carries the standard good or evil life path of a customizable charator with the twist of squad based Game play);2 NPC's at your side). beautfull cut seens; some better placed in to the game then others, Conversations that you control, Romatic sub-plot the "Codex" in the pause menu truely shows the emaculate detail placed into this game. minimum glitches.
The story was well thought out, it's like Kinghts of the Old Republic but with a better story and a brand new combat system that could be balanced ( Assualt rifle owns all )
I played through the whole game and was immensely disappointed. It's extremely repetitive, bland and the character development is very shallow and uninspired. The countless and repetitive "side missions" didn't add anything to the game.
The graphics and voice acting were pretty good, but that's about all this game had going for it.
I've played RPGs since they began and I simply do not understand the ratings this game gets. I was so glad when i finished it.
