A modern-day superhero saga, Dark Sector is a third-person shooter where players assume the role of the protagonist, Hayden Tenno who gains the ability to morph into dramatically different combat forms. Set in the crumbling infrastructure of a fictional Soviet-bloc country in the near future, the game features both single and multi-player action, with players working their way through a world where bio-weapons are no longer science experiments, but a hellish nightmare let loose on an unsuspecting populace.
Dark Sector is a third person action game with a predictable story, somewhat cheap A.I. and poor melee combat. However despite all that, its fun while it lasts, using your abilities, mainly your blade arm which you can manually control (works well once you get the hang of it), you plow through various enemies and some entertaining/cool boss fights. Online multiplayer is limited and not really fun. Overall the experience left me wanting more, but still worth a rental.
With all the negative reviews, I expected a rather bad game. True, the melee combat is cumbersome and the storyline is weak. On the other hand, I did find the graphics to be quite good (if not perfect) and providing the appropriate mood, while the glaive is a different, refreshing idea that's fun to use. In the end, even if it does get a little long, I enjoyed playing the game way more than I expected.
Dark Sector is a pretty good game. It has good game mechanics but it has two big flaws. 1) some of the gameplay can get real repeatative, 2) it has damn near NO STORY! here's an example "Hayden, you need to get that suit!" "What suit?" "you know... that one suit!" "Oh THAT suit. should we give a little backstory?" "Naw, it's cool"
7.5 out of 10,good, could have been a lot better.
Interesting concept with the glaive but the combat mechanics fall short and the complete lack of a plot put this game towards the middle of the pack. I enjoyed the story mode but found multiplayer to be almost an afterthought.
This game was disappointing overall, but specifically in the department of graphics, controls, and originality. The sound quality was good, and the powers were fun to use. The enemies weren't all that scary, looking like shiny robots in the bland and colourless environments, and generally just acting like zombies.
An average shooter. The game takes a lot of its design from Gears of War, but lacks punch. The engine is more stable that UE3 but I'm wasn't playing an engine, I was playing a game. They add a layer to the Gears design with the glaive, which you use in metroid like puzzle solving, and as a weapon. It isn't a bad game, but it isn't a good game either.
On the whole my impression is Dark Sector is not a bad game but could be better.
Graphics:
Decent - I would not say the graphics are great but their ok. The game's pretty dark so that would help to hide a lot of flaws. There are minor graphical glitches. But on the whole decent.
Gameplay:
Good - This is a kinda fun game to play once you get use to the mechanics. The animations for the gravel kills do get tiresome over time and it's wired that the enemy scream before being hit.
